Lover Enshrined (Black Dagger Brotherhood # 6)

Phury, Son of Ahgony
(Twin brother of Zsadist)
The brother I would want looking out for me...

Review: Lover Enshrined
Publication Date: June 3, 2008

Genre: Romance, Fantasy

The Story: (J.R. Ward) In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there’s a deadly war raging between vampires and their slayers. And there exists a secret band of brothers like no other—six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. And now, a dutiful twin must choose between two lives...

Fiercely loyal to the Black Dagger Brotherhood, Phury has sacrificed himself for the good of the race, becoming the male responsible for keeping the Brotherhood's bloodlines alive. As Primale of the Chosen, he is to father the sons and daughters who will ensure that the traditions of the race survive and that there are warriors to fight those who want all vampires extinguished.

As his first mate, the Chosen Cormia wants to win not only his body but his heart for herself- she sees the emotionally scarred male behind all his noble responsibility. But while the war with the Lessening Society grows more grim, and tragedy looms over the Brotherhood's mansion, Phury must decide between duty and love.

My Review: And now we come to Phury.  To be honest, this is the review I have dreaded writing.  Phury is not one of my favorite brothers; however, to me, he is one of the most real of the brothers.  But let me tell you a little about his story...

Phury is the twin brother of Zsadist.  In fact, Phury rescued Zsadist from that evil mistress that held Zsadist prisoner, and in the rescue attempt, he shot off his own leg so that they could get away.  He now has a prosthetic leg.  Also, as a tribute/sacrifice for his brother, Phury took a vow of celibacy.  However, he chose to forsake his vow so that Vishous could be with Jane (Vishous was supposed to be the Primale, but Phury stepped up to take hiw place). So, Phury seems like this self-sacrificing, put others, especially Zsadist, first kind of vampire.

But Phury has a dark side.  First, he's a drug addict.  His addiction to red smoke spirals out of control until he decides to shoot up heroine, and nearly kills himself in the process. He also turns out to have a sinister nature that was something of a shocker.  Add to all this a savior complex, and suddenly no one to save, and you have one vampire that's getting out of control.

Cormia is one of the Chosen, one of the 40 or so female vampires that Phury will mate with as the Primale to produce the next generation of Chosen and Black Dagger Brotherhood Warriors.  being the Primale isn't going exactly as it should for Phury, and he soon figures out that its not what he wants.  He wants Cormia. But can he forsake his duty as the Primale?

Reading this book was difficult.  The book is as excellent as the first five, but I found this book difficult because of Phury's struggle with addiction and his savior complex.  While the other brothers had to deal with circumstances from their past (typically with things done to them by others) Phury's struggle was internal- he had to deal with what he had done to himself.  In this book particularly, Ward's ability to present real struggles in a fictional world is amazing.

So, as a stated above, I would want Phury looking out for me.  He has some serious issues to deal with in Lover Enshrined, but when it comes down to it,  Phury is the one that will do everything in his power to keep others safe, no matter the risk to himself.

Quote: [Bella to Cormia] "You have what I call a 'male brow.' Which is a frown brought on when you're thinking about your male and you either want to boot him in the ass or wrap your arms around him and hold him 'til he can't breathe." (Lover Enshrined page 292)

Have you read Lover Enshrined?  What do you think of Phury?  Is he your favorite brother?

My Rating:

I think I mostly liked his book because it centered more on other characters such as JM, Blay and Qhuinn

Alexa- I was the same with this book. The Qhuinn/Blay dynamic is awesome. Not to mention, the Qhuinn, Blay, and JM make a really awesome team- kind of the next generation type thing with the changes that are occurring with the SV.
